Public engagement with history at sites, museums, and archives continues to increase in the twenty-first century. In general, the public trusts cultural institutions to enhance their historical knowledge but is sometimes quite skeptical about the choices public historians make in presenting the past. More and more, doctoral students of history look for employment opportunities in these types of cultural institutions. Even those students who expect to teach at a college or university will probably find themselves at some point in their careers being called upon to interact with the public through public programs or as consultants for cultural institutions.
